Front Royal, Va.- Christendom Baseball split its home-opening doubleheader at Bing Crosby Stadium in Front Royal against Virginia State, dropping game one 6-1 before bouncing back with a strong 5-1 victory in the nightcap.
Game 1: Virginia State 6, Christendom 1
The Crusaders struggled to generate offense in the opener, managing just three hits in a 6-1 loss to Virginia State.
Paul Amuso, Gus Coleman, and Peter Sullivan each recorded a hit for Christendom, while George Storey accounted for the team's lone run. Despite drawing two walks, the Crusaders were unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities, leaving six runners on base.
Virginia State was powered by Luka Gilliam, who drove in four runs, including a key home run that helped break the game open. Matthew May added two RBIs for the visitors.
On the mound, Rowland Thornberry took the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits over five innings while striking out four. Gus Coleman provided two scoreless innings of relief, striking out two and keeping Virginia State off the board late.
Defensively, Christendom turned in a clean effort aside from a lone error, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
Game 2: Christendom 5, Virginia State 1
The Crusaders responded in game two behind a dominant complete-game performance from Sam Romero and timely hitting throughout the lineup.
Virginia State struck first with a run in the opening inning, but Christendom answered quickly in the bottom of the second. Edmund Thomas delivered the biggest swing of the day, launching a two-run home run to give the Crusaders a 2-1 lead.
Christendom added to its advantage in the fifth inning when Peter Sullivan came through with a clutch two-RBI single, extending the lead to 5-1.
Offensively, Edmund Thomas led the way with a 2-for-3 performance, scoring twice and driving in two runs. Paul Amuso added two hits and a run scored at the top of the lineup, while Luke Roman contributed an RBI. Joe Romero and Gus Coleman also chipped in hits as part of an eight-hit effort.
On the mound, Sam Romero was outstanding, tossing a complete-game gem. He allowed just one run on four hits while striking out eight and keeping Virginia State off balance all afternoon.
Up Next: With the split, Christendom goes to 5-7 on the season. They will have an opportunity to bring their record to above .500 this weekend with a three game series against MACU on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday is a doubleheader starting at 1pm, and Sunday is a single game with first pitch at 1pm as well.
