Competing against a formidable opponent, the Christendom Crusaders won the first game of their double header against the University of Valley Forge Patriots this Saturday.
In the first game of the double header, the Crusaders had an impressive game, winning 15-10. The game started out rough for the Crusaders after Valley Forge’s pitcher struck out the Crusader’s first three hitters in the top of the first inning.
However, Valley Forge was unable to keep their lead for long. In the top of the third inning, Sophomore Bridget Handy smacked a leadoff homer to centerfield. The energy from this incredible hit carried through the rest of the inning as the Crusaders scored four more runs. Pitcher Mary Solitario was able to hold the Patriots for the next two innings. The Crusaders scored ten more runs and only allowed the Patriots five more runs, ending the game 15-10.
During this first game, Sophomore Mary Arnold and Senior Susie Adams lead the team in batting. Arnold had five hits and scored five runs while Adams had four hits and four RBI’s. Solitario struck out six in the first game as well.
Unfortunately, the Crusaders were unable to keep their momentum in the second game, losing 16-5.
After the game, team Captain Elizabeth Rensch commended the team, saying, “The mental game on and off the field made us able to play the game we did.”
The Crusaders prepare this week for their final game versus Trinity Washington University this Wednesday.
