Over $35,000 Raised for Student-Athletes at 16th Annual Golf Tournament
Front Royal, Va.- More than $35,000 was raised for Christendom's student-athletes at the 16th annual Thomas S. Vander Woude Memorial Golf Tournament, held this past week at Shenandoah Valley Golf Club. The event saw a record turnout of nearly 200 golfers — including alumni, friends, and benefactors of the college — along with nearly 50 sponsors, all united in support of Christendom's athletic programs.
One of Christendom's most anticipated annual events, the tournament serves not only as a key fundraiser but also as a celebration of the college's growing athletic tradition. Many current and former student-athletes were in attendance, reflecting the strong sense of community that defines Christendom athletics.
Following the day's competition, Phil, Josh, Sebastian, and Joe Daniels emerged as the tournament winners on the Titus Course, while Andy Albizures, Jaime Albizures, Nick Santschi, and James Salmon were winners on the Old Course. During the post-event awards ceremony, Athletic Director Patrick Quest announced the recipients of this year's Thomas S. Vander Woude Athletic Scholarships: Luke Vander Woude and Lucy Pennefather. Other scholarship recipients were also recognized, including seniors Megan Lovar and Bobby Vander Woude; juniors Mary Pennefather, Charlie Ackla, and Daniel Schultz; and sophomores Lucy Stahl and Edmund Thomas.
Established to provide financial support for student-athletes pursuing a Christendom liberal arts education, the tournament honors the memory of Thomas S. Vander Woude, a beloved former athletic director who heroically gave his life on September 8, 2008, while saving his youngest son. Vander Woude — father to many Christendom alumni — was deeply dedicated to the character formation of young people, especially through intercollegiate and intramural sports.
